Guitar legend Chet Atkins was one of the first people to inspire Emmanuel to pick up the instrument. Decades later, Atkins himself became one of Emmanuel's biggest fans. Chet and Tommy ended up recording together in 1996 on the CD, "The Day the Finger Pickers Took Over the World", which was nominated for a Grammy award. Sadly, this became Chet's last recording before his death in 2001. In 1999, Chet honored Tommy Emmanuel with the rare title of "Certified Guitar Player" for his lifetime contribution to the art of fingerstyle guitar playing, an honor shared by only two other people in the world (Jerry Reed and John Knowles).
Tommy is big in Australia and over in Europe, but guitar fans in America have just been learning about him the past few years. He appeared at the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society Convention a few years ago and brought the house down. People have been talking about him ever since, and his fame is spreading. "He's probably the greatest finger-picker in the world today", said Chet Atkins. "He’s inventive, fearless and has a flawless sense of rhythm. He’s a great showman, too. You can’t watch Tommy perform and not feel happy." To say he loves to play is an understatement of the highest order!
A tab book for all the tunes on the "Only" CD are (along with various videos) avaialble at SheetMusicPlus.com. The book called "Tommy Emmanuel Solo Guitar Style" also contains a number of earlier transcriptions but it appears that this book is no longer available.
